first ever site visit

on friday, i went on my first ever site visit with my faculty mates... to the Tuas South Incineration Plant and also the Tuas Marine Transfer Station. whoa... really learnt a lot on the trip.. so fun. and also so smelly. haha

first we went to the Tuas Marine Transfer Station. u all may not know wat is it. it is the last stop our incinerated waste stays before shipping on a 2.5 hours journey to our only offshore reclaimation island, Palau Semakau. it is this very big, vacant area. every thing was big big and big... the ship tt the incinerated waste stays and the truckloads of trucks fully-laden with incincerated waste arriving at the site to dump the wastes every few seconds. the place looked very desserted but also full of life... it was very dirty and dusty. we went down to the place where the trucks arrive to dump and witness the entire dumping session. the ship didnt look very deep but u could feel the deepness of the ship when u see the waste literally flowing out of the truck and making somewat of a splashing noise. very thunderous. and the acrid smell in the air.. oh... reminds mi of sulphur dioxide and ammonia...

then we went to the Tuas South inceineration plant. this is the first stop where all our wastes go to. wastes tt cannot be further incinerated will then be sent to the Marine Transfer Station to be shipped out. we went to the reception hall where rubbish trucks dump their wastes in this HUGE enclosed area where all the rubbish are kept before they are sent to be incinerated. wastes in there can stay for up to a few weeks! imagine the odour! the guy said if u have to go in for an hour for necessary maintanance work, u'll still smell of rubbish even after bathing a few times... the smell juz linger between ur fingers.. ew.. then we went to see the incineration process (yes, i saw the flames in action) and the main brain unit of the whole incineration process. this plant is the biggest in the whole of the whole, costing about 9000 million or 900 million to build! in such a small country like ours.. we have to invest in an incineration plant cause we juz can't afford to dump in landfill sites...

in fact, we were reclaming so near to a malaysia off shore island! no wonder our neighbours are complaning!

i've learnt a whole lot more but i dun think i shall bore u with the details here.. haha... love the trip! though very smelly... hahaha...

next time!
